How to Apply Peel & Stick Tile on a Wall

Add tiles to your walls without grout and mortar. Peel-and-stick or self-adhesive tiles make changing the decor in any room quick and easy. Whether you have just moved into a new home, or simply wish to change the style of your personal space, you can accomplish this task without the help of a professional. In addition to being easy to apply, these tiles are also easy to cut, so you can fit them around awkward shapes without the use of heavy machinery.

Measure the wall space with a tape measure to get an accurate figure of the number of tiles you need to purchase. You need to measure the complete width and height to get the area of each wall. Combine the figures of all walls to determine the total area to be covered.

Visit your local home-improvement retailer and check the boxes of peel-and-stick tile to learn the square footage each box covers. Divide the total area of your project by the square footage that each box covers. Your answer is the total number of boxes you’ll need. Round up to the next whole number to ensure you have enough tiles.

Clean the surface of the wall with tribasic sodium phosphate (TSP), or another all-purpose cleaner, and allow the wall to dry completely. If the wall has been painted recently, wait three weeks after painting before attempting the tile installation.

Mark the position of each tile using a pencil, a ruler and a carpenter’s level to ensure that each one is spaced correctly.

Trim the excess material off of tiles that are along the edges of an object or in the corner of a wall. In order to trim the tile, use scissors or a box cutter.

Peel the backing off of each tile and place it into the position on the wall; do not touch the adhesive on the back. Press firmly and continue applying tiles until you have completed the design on your wall.

Remove the tiles by heating the surface with a hair dryer and gently pulling from the corner or each tile.

Wait at least three weeks before applying tiles to freshly painted walls.
