How to Check the Filters on a Smelly Whirlpool Dishwasher

Whirlpool dishwashers are equipped with a detachable screen installed over a cylinder filter to catch food particles that could clog your plumbing. The screen and filter must be cleaned regularly to prevent a build up of decomposing food, resulting in bacteria that cause an unpleasant odor inside the appliance, as well as stagnant water. Removing, checking and cleaning the filtration system takes only a few minutes. No tools or special skills are required.

Open the Whirlpool's door and lower it to the horizontal position.

Pull the lower dish rack forward and empty, then lift out the rack and set aside to make it easier for you to work inside the appliance.

Turn the perforated screen counterclockwise to unlock it from the inside bottom of the whirlpool. Lift out the screen.

Pull the filter underneath the screen out of the appliance.

Wash both parts under running water to remove food particles and grit. Scrub each part with an old toothbrush to remove caked-on crud.

Soak the filter in a solution of equal parts cold water and distilled vinegar to remove odors. Leave the dishwasher door open to air out the appliance while cleaning and soaking the filter.

Reinstall the filter and screen before operating the Whirlpool.
