How to Remove a Deep Well Submersible Pump

Your submersible pump resides in your well. If you use well water in your home, you have a PVC tube in your yard where a deep water pump connects to a water supply hose. The pump pulls water out of the well, up through the hose and into your house. If the pump goes bad, your home is left without water until you can pull the pump out of the PVC well tube and replace it with a functioning pump. Although the process is not hard, keep in mind that most wells are a hundred or more feet in the ground. Expect to need the help of several people to help you pull the pump out of the well.

Difficulty:Moderately Easy1

Turn off the electrical breaker that powers the pump.

2

Locate the PVC well tube. In most cases, you will see a metal cap on top of the tube. Remove the bolts that secure the metal tap to the PVC tube with a wrench and place the tube off to the side.

3

Thread the T-handle bar onto the coupler mounted inside the PVC tube. The coupler mounts to the top of the water supply hose. The company that installed your well should have supplied you with the T-handle for your well. If not, you must contact them to obtain one.

4

Pull straight up on the T-handle bar to disconnect the water supply hose from the intake valve mounted inside the PVC tube. As you pull on the T-handle bar, you are also pulling the water supply hose out of the well.

5

Continue to pull on the T-handle bar until you pull the entire hose and the pump mounted to the bottom of the hose out of the well. As needed, have additional people grip the water supply line and help you pull. Again, the hose could be several hundred feet long so let neighbors know what you are doing as you will likely need to go onto their property with the hose.
